Consume the Forsaken is a complicated, atonal etude of death
metal that begins, proceeds, and ends in the same blasted fashion. I can count
the Unique Leader bands I’ve remembered over the years on one hand (Spawn of
Possession being the most talented and listenable) and I can’t even begin to emphasize
the negative impact of listening to 30+ minutes of 16-note-to-triplets-back-to-16-note
palm-muted riffs (I’ve heard people refer to this as “progressive” before). Disgorge
(from San Diego, not to be confused with a Mexican death/grind band of the same
name, or some band called Intestinal Disgorge from someplace) does benefit from
a very good drummer with a forte for cymbal work, and is the prominent showcase
of the album, dominating all aspects of the mix. Nary a riff or a bass to be heard
once the yucky vocals begin and stop (they never stop), but very few glimpses of thickness
crawl through when the mathematics slow. Basically a loud symphony percussed by
blast beats, almost completely lacking hook, but played crisply, at least from
what I can tell. Only album with AJ Magana on vocals, as if it mattered.
Real-life tragedy as bassist Ben Marlin died in 2008 of cancer. No guitar
solos.
